Safety award for ferry company

The Red Funnel team receiving the President’s Award at the RoSPA Awards Presentation at the Birmingham NEC.

FERRY company Red Funnel has received the President’s Award for occupational health and safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for the fourth consecutive year.

The awards, which were presented at a ceremony in Birmingham this month, recognised efforts to prevent accidents and ill health.

Red Funnel chief executive Kevin George said: "Red Funnel is incredibly proud of this award which I have accepted on behalf of all our staff. The safety of our customers and staff is, and will remain, at the heart of everything that we do and it is a responsibility which we take incredibly seriously."

replying to Colin Barton :- The reason for loading alternate lanes is to allow enough time for drivers and passengers to get out of their vehicles in safety without the worry or danger of cars coming down an adjacent lane hitting open doors, children, luggage etc.
This is also the most time-efficient method of loading the ship. It does mean that individual cars stowage is not always related to the time of arrival in the terminal, but the advantages for everyone outweigh the lost time at discharge for a few.

Lovely award. Would have been better if a member of staff had been the recipient and a gift given to encourage them. Am not knocking management but the staff that work all night and are on the forefront should be acknowledged more. Staff are the ones that have to be in situ to enforce health and safety. Their hard efforts are why the company have achieved the award for 4 consecutive years. Just saying.

It's great to have acknowledgement for their very good work. Priority to Health & Safety is excellent.
It's a shame ROSPA charge £100s +VAT to apply for the award though.

Good for them. One question I wish to ask them on their loading strategy is.....why the leading cars can be put in a third lane on the ferry, and late boarders end up neare r the front for disembarkation!
Is it weight distribution incase the ferry tilts before leaving? or?
