A TEAM of staff representing the YMCA on the Island aims to clock up the cash in aid of the charity’s Children’s Bereavement Services, when they take part in a Continental screwball rally.

Five members of the Shanklin branch will set off on the 1,800-mile trip on Wednesday, September 26, aiming to raise more than £5,000.

They will travel across England, France, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

En route, at each service station, the team will perform Village People’s classic, YMCA.

The team’s challenge is to complete the trip in five days in a car worth less than £750.

The car was donated by F. H. Winter and Sons, Havenstreet.

The cash raised will go towards the bereavement service’s support of children and young people on the Island affected by the death of someone close to them, offering free professional bereavement counselling while educating the community about the effects bereavement has on their lives.

It is estimated around 400 Island children and young people are affected by bereavement every year.

The team and car will be at St Thomas’s Square, Newport, raising awareness of their challenge on Saturday, September 22.

Individuals who would like to help can donate to the screwball rally’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/ymcascrewball2012
