Sticky situation for roads

Stone Shute, Blackwater. One of the roads that has melted and is being re-surfaced.

UPDATED 16:24*

INVESTIGATIONS are taking place to find out what has gone wrong with new road surfaces which have melted in the hot weather.

A contractor recently "surface-dressed" miles of highway in a near £1million contract, but stretches of road, including those at Blackwater and Bembridge, started to melt two days ago in temperatures of 27C.

They would normally be expected to stand-up to much higher temperatures.

Material has been spread on the melting tar in an attempt to make it less sticky while the contractor worked out a solution.

*The council said the bill for remedial work would be footed by original contractor, mainland business Kiely Brothers or its material supplier.

Island firm J A Dempsey Civil Engineering has been called in to carry out the work.

Thanks again IWCC, tar all over the place and almost a chipped windscreen. I WILL be sending the bill to the council, and whats going to happen when it rains??? It's going to be a slippery as ice!! I can foresee a lot of accidents!

What a complete waste of money 'ssing' the roads in this way. I doubt the authorities will pay for the chipped windscreen and three lumps out of the bonnet to be repaired. I have yet to set about all the tar spattered over the back and sides of the van.

The whole thing is a disgrace and they can't even be bothered to take down the original warning signs that litter the verges.

Next time, resurface the road properly and repair the potholes with what funds are available. Just leave the rest alone because it would have been better than what we have now.

Who do I send the bill to for a new air filter as mine is now bunged up with all the rubbish ingested from your quick fix material?

I drove along the arreton/blackwater road yesterday & I was wondering why the road was white! there are roadwork signs, butno roadworks & nothing to say there is a problem with the road surface! or even to slow down because of it.....

I wonder who takes responsibilty in the event of an accident? Surely this surface affects tyres, breaking, steering etc. As a motorcyclist I have been left with limited routes to travel. Like other people have pointed out, who is footing the bill for the maintenance of our vehicles??? Once again the council left red faced with embarrassment, and the tax paying public left red faced with anger!

Yet again shoddy work on I.O.W roads! £1 million what a joke! With a cycling event and several motorcycle events on the island the dreaded grit came out again as it does most years, redressing the road surfaces without even filling in the pot holes . This is dangerous for motorcyclists and cyclists (I am both). Why do we pay road tax? Does this practice happen on the mainland? Will cyclists and motorcyclists come back to the island next year? - Shame on you Council /highways !!!

Unbelievable! I have personally witnessed this driving from Newport to Cowes particularly on Horse bridge Hill. On Friday 25th the car was stating a temperature of 27 degrees and it was like driving through treacle.

It would appear just the latest example of how the Council/highway’s allows our roads to be treated. I am guessing that the reason for this is down to costs somewhere and that either the material is inadequate and or the procedures used to lay it were inappropriate! The other answer is that contractors are not monitored or controlled properly. Before anyone claims that this is just another example of cost cutting due to the current economic pressure, this has always been the same on the Island and it really is about time that it was sorted.

There is excuse after excuse from the Authorities regarding Island roads and I would accept that a lot of Island roads are nothing more than glorified farm roads but you would expect something a tad better on the main roads!

I noticed that couple of days ago. Was coming out of Newport and wondered what that weird noise was, then realised it was the wet tarmac. I've not checked my car, may have a look and see if damage has been done.

i think this kind of resurfacing has always been a waste of money, as we have seen, the hot weather makes it sticky, the cold icy weather makes if flakes off, it hides the potholes which aren't even filled before being camouflaged by this stuff and it needs to be patched over and over, why not just spend a few more quid first time round and do a PROPER tarmac surface, make decent drainage for the roads with water running beneath (of which there are plenty where i live).. it damages cars and bikes and makes the surface a danger to drive on. come on councillors do it right 1st time and stop wasting our cash, we must have some of the worst roads in the uk .. not happy!

What a complete shambles this is. Shame on you iow council, firstly for employing mainland contractors, secondly for allowing people's hard earned cash to be used on useless resurfacing rather than doing a proper job in the first place. This costs tax payers double as they also have to pay for the damage this is doing to ours cars. It took me three hours last weekend to get the tar off my car and the amount of stone chips are disgusting. Now tar covered tyres. Perhaps you would like to forfeit our council tax/ car tax for compensation. Won't hold my breath.
