THE estranged couple who died when their car went over Culver Cliff, intended to kill themselves, the Isle of Wight coroner concluded.

Coroner John Matthews recorded a verdict of double suicide at today's (Friday) inquest into the deaths of Paul James Charles, 53, of Albert Road, Sandown, and his wife, Jacqueline, 48, of Union Road, Ryde.

The couple died on August 17 last year when Mr Charles, a former police officer, drove their Renault Scenic over Culver Cliff.

The inquest heard how the couple had been depressed by the breakdown of their marriage and issues around their children.

A suicide note was found with Mr Charles, while a similar note was found at Mrs Charles's home, the two-day inquest heard.
