Suitable turbine sites 'a challenge' says council

THE refusal of plans for a wind farm in the West Wight does not signal a blanket opposition to turbines, according to the Isle of Wight Council.

Following last night’s Isle of Wight Council planning committee refusal for plans to build five 100m turbines on farmland near Wellow and Thorley, economy and environment cabinet member Cllr George Brown said: "The decision to refuse this application is not a signal of a blanket opposition to onshore wind turbines — it merely highlights that such developments must not impinge on the Island's most protected areas.

"This is in line with national planning policies introduced by the last government and continued by their successors.

"On an Island where 50 per cent of the land is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this inevitably presents a challenge for developers but we must balance the benefits of such applications against the need to protect the very countryside that makes us such a popular location.

"Our role is to preserve and enhance the Island's natural beauty — if that can go hand in hand with renewable energy projects, all the better. The council has already given permissions for wind turbine schemes which were at the time compatible with this aim.

"It is important to note that there are other applications for wind turbines in the pipeline and these will be judged on their individual merits."

ThWART (The Wight Against Rural Turbines) said in a statement this morning it welcomed the decision to refuse the development.

"Our 3,000 supporters will be delighted this highly damaging proposal has been rejected. It’s a victory for the Isle of Wight, for its residents and the thousands of visitors who come here every year to enjoy the Island’s special, tranquil landscape," said ThWART chairman Malcolm Peplow.

ThWART has pledged to continue campaigning against separate plans for turbines at Great Park, near Carisbrooke and Parkhurst Forest.

The Infinergy application was a controversial one, attracting 1,274 letters of support and 836 letters of objection.

According to Isle of Wight Council a total of 177 people attended the planning meeting — 118 objectors, 36 supporters and 23 who did not express a preference.

Infinergy said last night it intended to appeal the decision.

I see the CP has removed the possibly libellous comment from Mr. Behmer.
Have a look at:
www.eadt.co.uk/news/turbine_is_up_for_sale_1_1010169

which features an eco-warrior named Dr. Belsey who, 2 years ago, built a home with as low a carbon footprint as possible in Boxford, Suffolk, and was featured on TV show Grand Designs.

As part of the project, a large wind turbine was constructed to supply power to the property but it has failed to deliver and is now up for sale on eBay.

First off, the gearing mechanism failed and had to be replaced, then when the wind blew too strongly, the turbine rattled and shook, made a lot of noise and had to be turned off - FOR EVER.

When I watched the programme on 4OD, I was rolling about laughing!

£40 grand down the drain to find out that wind does not work. Superb!

Good old Isle of Wight - still stuck in the 1950's attitude of cream teas, coach trips, thatch cottages and deck chairs. WightAir went to Brighton because of a few objections from the residents of Yaverland over one night of music, the MOTOX at Arreton, part of the World Series, went due to opposition from locals - what next?? - stop the Music Festival because of mud on the road (its started already!!)
Wind Farm - does it go to a public consultation and then take into consideration the resistance of a few the Landed Gentry and holiday home owners who throw their family toys out of the pram to ensure the plan is refused.
Wake up you NIMBYS this has got to happen eventually otherwise we're all up a very dark street without a light!!

I was at the meeting last night and spoke against the turbines. I did so because I represent West Wight Ward and because democracy means I put forward the views of the majority of people in my ward. That's not just the area within a mile or so of the turbines, but it stretches from Yarmouth in the west almost to Gurnard in the east and to the foot of the downs in the south. There was extensive consultation, in the form of at least 4 open public meetings, 5 exhibitions and a questionnaire sent to 700 households. Add to this the hundreds of comments I had when canvassing last year and the telephone calls and emails I have received personally and it was clear that not just a majority, but an overwhelming majority of my constituents did not want this development. Before anyone calls them all NIMBY's can I point out that they are not against renewable energy. I have the highest concentration of commercial solar parks in my ward than anywhere on the Island. When the last one is completed (th

"The IWCP has always been anti wind energy. "
Dear Harald, that is a joke is it not?
You could not get a more eco friendly newspaper than the CP.
Look at their free "Green" supplement that is published every month.
And mentioning VB on here has a different and unwelcome connotation
on here.
As for calling IW Councillors "crooks", I should be very careful of the libel laws if I were you.
As for column inches "given" to Thwart, I suspect the CP would sooner poke red hot needles into their collective eyes!
