Trees felled by high winds

TREES have been brought down as the Isle of Wight was hit by high winds this morning (Tuesday).

Police were called to Staplers Road, Newport, shortly after 8am after the winds felled a tree.

It caused severe traffic disruption and Southern Vectis diverted its route 9 service via Staplers through Pan Estate. It has since reported the service was running as normal. The road has now been cleared.

*The High Street is blocked in Godshill due to a fallen tree, motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

A fallen branch has blocked the footpath on Wellington Road, Carisbroooke. An Isle of Wight Council highways team are arranging its clearance.

Fallen tree is blocking Alresford Road in Shanklin near the railway bridge.

Branches are overhanging Sandown Road in Brading just past the airport towards Bembridge. Cars need to swerve to avoid the branches so drivers are advised to take extreme care when approaching.

A tree is also down near Morton Cottage towards Brading Roman Villa. An Isle of Wight Council highways team are investigating.

A power line was also brought down at Broadway, Totland.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the Firestone Copse end of Newnham Lane in Binstead as a fallen tree is blocking the road.

Another tree has been brought down by the Blacksmith's Arms pub, near Carisbrooke, and part of the roof of a building in Cowes was blown off this morning. It has since been cleared from the road next to the fountain pub. 

A fallen tree is blocking the pavement on Foreland Road, Bembridge. The road is passable.

Wilmingham Lane, Freshwater, is completely blocked between Berry Cottage and the Middle Road due to a fallen tree. The Undercliff Drive in Ventnor, is also blocked.

Drivers of larger cars and tall vehicles are being advised to avoid the road passing the entrance to the campsite in Wroxall. A tree is leaning at an angle across the road. Smaller cars can pass beneath but drivers

should take care.

A tree is down at Yaverland Road, Yaverland, adjacent to Rose Cottage. The road is passable.

There is a fallen tree is on Whippingham Road, near Racecourse Roundabout, but the road is also passable.

A tree is also down 100 metres before Heathfield Road heading from Yarmouth. Highways staff are investigating and it is unclear whether the road is passable.

Cowleaze Road in Shanklin has partially re-opened after it was closed earlier due to a fallen tree. Police are currently guiding motorists through.

A tree was also brought down on Leeson Road, Ventnor, by the garlic fields this morning. Isle of Wight Council highway staff were arranging the clearance of the tree.
