THE importance of saving water was the message sent out to children at St Saviour’s School, Totland.
Members of the Island’s Footprint Trust were on hand to explain the Adopt a Bottle campaign and to show off a 'magic watering can’.
The Footprint Trust’s general manager, Ray Harrington-Vail, explained: "We spoke to all the classes from the reception year upwards.
"I was amazed at how much the younger children knew about water, where it comes from and where it goes to.
"This was part of a series of workshops we are conducting all over the Island to explain how to save water.
"We’re aiming to give every Island schoolchild under 16 a recycled bottle to highlight the importance of water.
"We also showed the children the 'Nucan’ watering can, which we call our special magic can. It can only be operated by pressing a button, so that means you can sprinkle one plant at a time instead of waving the can everywhere and wasting water.
"For the older children, we explained how water is such a valuable commodity in Third World countries and how there was so much disease in Victorian London because the water was contaminated.
"This has been our driest winter for 30 years, so it is vital we get the children to understand the benefits of saving water and recycling."
