Turning tide on litter

VOLUNTEERS are still being sought to take part in next Saturday, May 12’s Big Beach Clean-up.

Organised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) together with retailer Marks & Spencer, it will take place at Seaview beaches.

Volunteers are needed to take part in a fulfilling and fun day out. Anyone who registers in advance at www.mcsuk.org/foreverfish will receive an M&S money-off voucher and receive free M&S snacks on the day.

MCS chief executive Samantha Fanshawe said: "MCS surveys have shown beach litter levels are unacceptably high.

"We are delighted M&S recognises the importance of clean seas and beaches and will be joining forces with us in this major event to help turn the tide on litter."

The M&S Big Beach Clean-up is part of M&S’s Forever Fish campaign, which is funded by the 5p carrier bag charge in M&S foodhalls.

Since its introduction in 2008, the charge has reduced carrier bag use by 80 per cent and raised more than £4 million for charity.

On another forum I subscibe to, the comment of climate change came up and that ours is changing. 'Not in the last 70 years' I affirmed

And that set me thinking. In the 1962/63 freeze up, the unemployed were out on the pavements with shovels clearing the snow ....................... or no benefits.

why are volunteers still being sought when half the island seems to be on benefits?, get them out to clean the beaches!!! how ridiculous, lets face it they are the ones who will be getting the benefits of clean beaches this summer, (if we ever get one) not the workers thats for sure!!
