ASSURANCES over his plans to stand for election have been welcomed by Unison secretary Mark Chiverton.
Mr Chiverton has been at the centre of a row between the union, Isle of Wight Labour and the Isle of Wight Council, since claiming he was given an ultimatum to either stand-down as prospective parliamentary candidate or leave his seconded post at the council.
Chief executive Steve Beynon said he regretted any misunderstanding or distress caused over the past week.
Mr Beynon said he had also given a written assurance Mr Chiverton was not required to choose between his political campaign and his job at County Hall.
Mr Chiverton, who is due to meet with Mr Beynon tomorrow, to discuss issues including the ongoing dispute over car allowances, described the comments as helpful.
"It is important to move on and deal with wider issues at the council," said Mr Chiverton, who said he was overwhelmed by the support he received over the past week.
