Bright new kit for youngsters

A seven-a-side football team from Wimbledon will kick off the new season with a brand new look. The Wimbledon Chase under-nines will wear a new blue and yellow strip thanks to the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society which agreed to lend the squad its official colours after a cry for help from team manager Keith Kelly. The boys will sport their new shirts and shorts at the Arsenal Internation-al Soccer Festival at Royal Holloway University of London, in Egham, on Sunday.

Fighting spirit

The borough's youngsters came out fighting in Raynes Park as they learnt to fence as part of Merton Leisure's summer activities for children. The group of eight to 14 year olds at Raynes Park Pavilion, Taunton Avenue, were taught the art of swordplay at classes last week.

Games continue

A new football league is to come to the rescue of under-10s and under-eights teams in Merton when an FA ruling banning youngsters from games on grass comes into play. John Wilkins, general secretary of the Small-Side Soccer Centres, said the new league will provide matches for seven-a-side teams on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 4pm. Call Mr Wilkins on 0181 646 3282.
