Level 42's Mark King at the fire walk

THE Isle of Wight Walking Festival kicked off in spectacular style last night (Saturday) with daredevil fire and glass walks in Newport town centre.
Island celebrity Mark King, of Level 42, and County Press columnist Keith Newbery were among the brave souls to walk barefoot over hot coals following a fear-busting 'learn or burn' seminar with fire walking experts.
The launch event, at St Thomas' Square, also included a terrifying glass walk, where people walked barefoot over razor sharp shards from two thousand broken wine bottles.
Both walks are in aid of the charity Beaulieu House, a respite centre for children in Newport.
The Isle of Wight Walking Festival, which last year attracted 19,000 walkers, will run until May 20, and include nature and wildlife walks, wild food walks, coastal scrambles, night walks, fossil hunts and, of course, the Island's famous speed dating walk.
