A GROUP of Ryde residents have won their battle to keep their wheelie bins.
The Isle of Wight Council was forced into doing a U-turn about collecting their wheelie bins after residents in Meaders Road complained about the health and safety effect changes to their proposed recycling arrangements would have on the street.
Meaders Road resident Jayne Clews, who started a petition against the move, fearing foxes, cats and vermin would rip open the waste sacks if left on the street, said she was delighted by the council’s change of heart.
The Isle of Wight Council had originally told the County Press it would no longer empty the bins of the road’s 25 properties because it claimed it could not manoeuvre its refuse lorry past parked cars. It disputed the sacks would be ripped open.
However, Sue Dasent, Isle of Wight Council manager for procurement and contracts, said she had written to residents in Meaders Road informing them the council had changed its mind about collecting waste from the recycling bins and would run the service as before.
The decision was made following further discussions with Island Waste Services, which had raised the issue on grounds of road safety.
