Wide-ranging reasons for no-confidence votes

By Ross Findon - Friday, February 5, 2010

BUDGET cuts, the on-going car allowance dispute and the treatment of Unison branch secretary Mark Chiverton, were among the issues that led to last night’s (Thursday) votes of no confidence.
In separate votes, motions of no confidence in both council leader Cllr David Pugh and chief executive Steve Beynon were supported by around 150 votes in favour, three abstentions and none against.
Despite denials by Mr Beynon, Mr Chiverton has maintained that he was given an ultimatum to stand down as branch secretary seconded to the Isle of Wight Council, or give up his Labour general election candidacy.
Last night’s meeting was called to discuss the on-going row between some council workers and the authority over changes to the essential car users allowance and budget cuts. However, Mr Chiverton’s position was also discussed.
Mr Chiverton said there was anger among some staff that they had learned of some proposed cuts at the authority through the media and not through their managers.
Following last night’s meeting a letter will be sent to Mr Beynon and Cllr Pugh, outlining the concerns of staff and the result of the no-confidence vote.
Mr Chiverton, who said he was buoyed by the support of fellow union members, told the County Press there was a need for urgent talks to discuss the car-allowance situation and budget cuts.
"The general feeling is one of a complete lack of confidence and stressing the absolute need to change the emphasis, direction and attitude towards relations with staff and their representatives," he said.
