UPDATED TUESDAY 09:40*

A 22ft yacht had to be towed to safety by Cowes RNLI after its tiller broke in lively seas in the Solent today (Monday).

The boat, Breakaway, had one man on board, and was first taken in tow by a passing yacht Seaduction.

*Adam Pearson of Emsworth, Chichester Harbour was on his way to watch the Olympics when the tiller broke.

Seaduction, took it under tow near Salt Mead Buoy, off Newtown, but due to challenging conditions, Seaduction radioed Solent Coastguards for assistance.

"The lifeboat, which was launched around 1.40 pm, took over the tow and brought Breakaway into Cowes Yacht Haven.

"To give more stability to Breakaway during the tow in the rough conditions the lifeboat deployed an emergency drogue astern of the yacht until Cowes Harbour was reached," a spokesman said.

Helmed by Scott Armiger, the lifeboat had been off-station for about an hour.
