JOAN Baker, formerly of Newport, died on Sunday at a care home in Dedham, Essex, aged 96.

Mrs Baker, who was born in Fulham, London, on January 10, 1916, lived in Newport from 1948 to 1977.

She had lived in Uruguay prior to her marriage to Stanley Baker in 1949.

Mrs Baker worked as a teacher at Barton Infants School in the 1950s and later worked for the Health Executive Council in Newport.

During the 1960s, she was very supportive of 1st Newport (The Old Guard) Scout Group, and went on to become secretary of the Central Island Scout District and IW County scout secretary.

Mrs Baker was very active with the Newport branch of the Townswomen’s Guild.

In 1977, she left the Island and moved to Herefordshire, and then to Spain after her husband’s death in 1990. For the last ten years she lived in Suffolk.

She leaves her sons, Dave and Michael, daughters-in-law, Beth and Mollie, as well as grandchildren Paul, Louise and Mark, and great-grandchildren, Chloe and Thomas.

The funeral is at Colchester Crematorium at next Friday, November 2, at 3.30pm.
