John Leigh
MEMBERS of Cowes Town Council stood for a minute’s silence in memory of former mayor, John Leigh, who died last month, aged 82.
A tribute to Mr Leigh was made by deputy mayor of Cowes, Cllr Geoff Banks, before the start of the council’s meeting last Thursday.
Cllr Banks praised Mr Leigh’s contribution to the life of the town.
He said: "John was a member of Cowes Town Council for a considerable number of years and was a great champion on behalf of the people of Cowes."
Mr Leigh joined Cowes Town Council in 1995 and was town mayor from 1999 to 2001.
He was the first mayor to wear the mayoral chain he helped design and during his term he was responsible for creating Cowes Skate Park, pushed to get seats installed on the front edge of the Green and served as nominated member of Cowes Harbour Commission.
