SAILING

SPECTACULAR J Class yachts will be gracing The Solent for the next three days for Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Solent Regatta.

The largest ever J Class fleet, featuring the likes of Velsheda, Endeavour, Lionheart and Rainbow, will be taking part in the three-day regatta until Saturday, when they will compete in the Hundred Guinea Cup Round the Island race.

The winner of the regatta will receive the Queen's Cup, presented in Southampton by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

The regatta is one of a series of top-class sailing events in The Solent, leading up to Cowes Week.

Last week the Panerai British Classic Week took place, and following this J Class event, there will be three regattas in one week off Cowes.

The highlight will be the Superyacht Cup Cowes, from July 22 to 25, which is the first of its kind to be held in the UK.

Among the 11-strong fleet will be the 62m Athos, and the 55m Adela, and racing starts on July 23 from 11am.

In addition to this, the Commodores’ Cup and the Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta will also take place, so there will be plenty to see from Cowes waterfront.
