SAILING
BRIGHT sunshine and unseasonal warm weather tempted 27 boats onto the water for the third round of Gurnard Sailing Club’s Sunday morning Frostbite Series.
With the wind oscillating between zero and five knots there was a fair amount of luck needed to be in the right place at the right time to catch the fickle breeze. Robin Leather led the cats throughout, only to find himself becalmed within 100 yards of the finish line, and unable to prevent Carl Blenkinsop sailing past in less tide offshore to take the winning gun.
Derek Ness and Ben Symons looked set for a similar fate in the medium handicap, having seen their huge lead reduced to virtually nothing as Ellie Symons and Ellie Ness sailed up to them on a new breeze, but the long time leaders just managed to stay ahead on the final windward leg to win the battle.
Chris Hobday took line honours in the lasers, while Ted Blowers’s Laser 4.7 was the only finisher in the slow handicap.
