SPEEDWAY Wightlink Islanders 55, Scunthorpe Saints 37
AN EMPHATIC 55-37 victory against Scunthorpe Saints on Tuesday saw speedway team Wightlink Islanders climb up to third in the table.
The victory at Smallbrook came despite machine problems for heat leader, Kyle Hughes, and falls for Adam Ellis and skipper Danny Warwick in heats four and ten respectively.
Hughes, on a borrowed bike, won the only race he managed to complete, as mechanics struggled to cure the problems with his own machine, which occurred as the riders fired up their engines in the pre-meeting warm-up.
However, Mark Baseby led the way with his best performance for the Island team, winning four out of five rides, and Ben Hopwood also posted a double figure score.
Wightlink Islanders swiftly moved eight points up by recording two maximum heat wins in the opening three races of the match and they had too much scoring power for their opponents throughout.
Meanwhile, Warwick warmed up for the matches by finishing fourth in Sunday’s grasstrack meeting at Swingfield, Kent.
Wightlink Islanders were due to ride at Smallbrook last night (Thursday) against league leaders Dudley in the Knockout Cup.
