BOXING TWO young boxers from Wightlink-sponsored Newport ABC, showed they had a bright future ahead of them at a recent event in Oxford.
George Lawrence, 13, and Jack Murphy, 11, were part of a Southern Select team which took on a group of boxers from Oxon, Berks and Bucks in a team tournament, and performed excellently despite the tough 200-mile round trip.
In his first proper bout, George put in a very strong display against A. Ferris, over three 90-second rounds. With very accurate punching, George was always the better boxer and in the third round, after some heavy body shots, the referee stopped the fight.
Meanwhile, Jack took on L. Fell in a skills bout and again, was the better boxer throughout, although there was no official result.
Coach Derek Wolfe said: "The lads put in a great effort and I was really pleased with how they looked. They’ve really got potential."
