SHORWELL Netball Club had an enjoyable trip to Southampton for the Applemore Netball Club 50th anniversary tournament last week.

The club sent a nine-strong squad to compete in the competition, which was also raising money for Smile4Wessex, playing eight matches in the top-seeded section.

Shorwell enjoyed a 5-4 victory over Dreams 2 in the opening match, but lost 9-5 against 7 Birds in the second game.

Their third game was a 6-6 draw against JHC.

As the day progressed, some of the squad who had not played alongside their team-mates before, fought hard, with close defeats to Team Rock, Fleming Originals, Applemore OG and Ravens.

The last match of the day against JJets was exciting, with end to end play and, determined to end the day on a high, won 8-7.

Before the last matches, six Shorwell players took part in a shooting competition.

Coach Ann Selby and umpire Carol O’Brien did not do too well scoring 21 and 20 respectively in two mins, but Sarah Butler was the star, scoring 56.

Shorwell: Sarah Butler, Rachel Selby, Jo Holt, Abbie Howard, Steph Smith, Frances Crews, Charlotte Law, Beth Rayner, Katie Brammar.
