Shorwell II 12, Solent 38
AFTER a four-week break from playing, and illness forcing changes to start positions, Solent took time to settle into their usual game.
After a slow and sloppy start, tight defensive play from WD Carley Marshall, player of the match GD Raegan Booth and GK Lorraine White, helped Solent steal possession and move the ball to their own attack, with shooters Katia Siska and Kelly Ross converting.
Despite their low score, Shorwell still enjoyed a good game, with the outstanding GD Abbie Howerd, and GK Julie Cheek denying the Solent shooters and resulting in one of their lowest scoring matches this season.
Shorwell’s Jamie White stepped in to shoot, creating great space, scoring fine shots and encouraging the attacking end. WA Frances Crews constantly drove onto the ball linking the centre court and feeding well to Shorwell’s shooters.
Solent substitute Gemma Cowley came on at half time and her fresh legs helped Solent extend their lead.
Shorwell III 38, Gurnard 60
A well-deserved point gained by Shorwell III against a strong Gurnard side.
With several regular players missing, Mandy Piner and Carol O’Brien added experience to an already keen side. Mandy picked up many interceptions, while Helen Curel, Lorraine Stewart and Carol all working well together.
Excellent feeding by player of the match Yvette Henry, linking with centre Rene Stewart and Beth Rayner helped the side to a very respectable score line.
Shorwell 60, Solent II 13
Starting with only six players, Solent II struggled to keep up with a strong start by Shorwell.
Solent were up to full strength half way into the first quarter but took time to adjust to Shorwell’s style of play.
Tactical defence from Shorwell’s Maddie Rayson and regional player Sarah Butler made it difficult for Solent shooters to dominate their circle and resulted in many turnarounds. Great centre-court play from Shorwell’s Sally Lamb, Leanne Higginson and Lizzie Lewis, providing steady passing and good use of court space, led to accurate feeding into shooters Eleanor Mitchell and Beth Griffin, who both shot with great confidence. Solent held their own in the third quarter and never gave up. Solent’s player of the match was goal keeper Sam Bull.
