CYCLOCROSS

IT HAS been a silver season for cyclocross stars Sean Williams and Sarah Woods.

After a long and tough season both riders, from the Wightlink/Offshore/BAE Systems cycle racing team, came second overall in the Wessex Cyclocross League, in their respective categories.

The final round of the league took place at Culham Park near Abingdon last weekend, on a one-mile motocross track circuit.

Sean was on the front row of this mixed race but produced a fast start to stick to the leading pack to sit in fifth, then pull himself up to second spot where he remained to the finish, despite damaging his back wheel so badly he had to use his spare.

It meant he won the veterans’ category for the fifth time this season, and came second in the combined race, and second overall in the league — relinquishing his title of 2011 to GS Henley’s Mike Simpson.

Meanwhile, Sarah was also in this combined race. She found the course to her liking and comfortably won the ladies’ category, and came 48th out of the entire field.

This meant she also finished second in the ladies’ league, behind winner Tamina Oliver, of Hargroves Cycles.

Just one race remains, the National Championships at Bradford this weekend, where Williams will look to improve on last years eighth in the veterans’ over-40s race.
