PERFECT weather conditions set the stage for the Hurricanes to take another big step towards the Counties 2 Hampshire title at 'Fortress Fairway' on Saturday.

HURRICANES 55, LOCKSHEATH PUMAS 3

The Hurries predictably took the lead, with Michael Barrett charging through the line to open the score.

Following Barrett, Ash Smith, keeping his exceptional scoring streak going, flawlessly received a long pass from Antony Burr and touched down on the left.

Subsequently, Matt Miselbach stripped the ball from a Pumas player beneath his own posts, which resulted in the Islanders' third try.

A well-executed backs move, straight from the practice pitch, sealed the bonus point shortly afterwards, with Luke Wedderkop identifying and exploiting gaps in the Pumas' defence.

The first half finished with the Hurries ahead 26-3.

Immediately after the break, Zak Chiverton scored an awesome lone effort, further extending Sandown's lead.

Unfortunately, deteriorating field conditions began to affect the quality of play, which led to numerous handling errors.

There was frustration — and the penalty count — building, with both Sam Rees and Ben Shannon shown yellow cards.

Nonetheless, Sam Tyson marked the Hurries' sixth try of the afternoon.

Burr's shock quick tap following a penalty saw Chiverton score Sandown's seventh try, much to the delight of the coaching staff.

The floodgates opened as Ash Smith added yet another try to his tally, following a disorganised 22m kick, which he ran back decisively.

The Hurries' ninth and final try came courtesy of Wedderkop, who impeccably sliced through the Pumas' defence to finish off a pre-meditated line-out move.

The Hurricanes' director of rugby, Damien Marriott, was full of praise for his team’s performance — especially for their top-notch attack and impressive defence.

The improved set-piece performance was also noted as a substantial progress, adding further to his pride in the players’ efforts on and off the field.
